Carpenter ants are a wood-destroying member of the ant family. Even though they do not eat wood, they tunnel into it to make a nest. Carpenter ants are often confused with termites because they also destroy wood in your home. Both carpenter ants and termites have a winged reproductive ant with wings. These winged ants are a sign that the colony is growing. They can be black or red and black, but are usually larger than other ants (1/4″ to 1 1/2″).Carpenter ant colonies may contain as many as 3000-4000 ants.Carpenter ants are social insects who live together in large colonies. Like bees and termites, these insects have males, queens and workers.
Pavement ants are the small, reddish-brown ants commonly seen along pavement and sidewalks. They are known to feed on both greasy and sweet foods. Very often they build their nests along the sides of garages and houses, and parts of houses constructed on concrete slabs. They enter dwellings through cracks in basement walls or concrete floors, or through basement windows and doors. They can build their nest under a poured concrete slab if adequate access (cracks) is found.
The odorous house ant gets its name from the strong, rotten coconut-like smell it gives off when crushed. These tiny brown ants range in size from one-sixteenth of an inch to one-eighth of an inch long.
Argentine ants are very ordinary-looking, small brown ants. They are small and slender, 2.6 to 3.2mm long, and are dark brown in color. The worker ants are uniform in shape and size and move in well-defined trails. They have a slightly greasy, musty odor when crushed. Argentine ants do not possess a sting but will bite readily, although the bite is not painful
Known for their quick movements and erratic movement patterns, crazy ants happen to be the smallest type of ant and they are inexplicably attracted to electronic devices that create an electric current, such as laptops. They are reddish brown in color and are about an eighth of an inch long.
Southern fire ants and desert fire ants are two of the most common ant types found in Arizona. Not only are these ants aggressive and hard to kill, but they also have a nasty sting that can leave painful, itchy blisters lasting for many weeks. They have a dull red body coloration ranging from reddish brown to reddish black.

There are as many as 300 ant species in Arizona and all ants live in groups (colonies that are similar to bees). Some ants are harmless to humans, while others can bite or sting to defend themselves. Some of the most common ants that bite and sting include Fire ants, Carpenter ants, pavement ants, and crazy ants.
Killing ants will most certainly attract additional workers to the area. Ants rely heavily on pheromone marking to communicate, alerting other members of the colony of danger, food sources, and more.
